EDUCATION
DIFFERENTIATED
Differentiated Education is a political-educational action towards the empowerment and protagonism of the Yanomami people, favoring a proactive governance in relation to life in the territory and the construction of a dignified future. The school space has made it possible to address important issues for the Yanomami people such as: the promotion of education for citizenship, the strengthening of self-esteem and the affirmation of ethnic identity in the face of challenges in the relationship with the surrounding society, sustainability in their territory and others.
It is recommended to contribute to the construction of a Yanomami Educational Matrix recognized and supported by the Department of Education of the state of Amazonas.
principles of DIFFERENTIATED EDUCATION
Training of indigenous teachers:
Development of bilingual teaching materials;
Educational process of individuals respecting the social and linguistic differences of the community.
Teacher follow-up:
Observation of the needs and challenges faced by the teacher on a day-to-day basis .
Yanomami teacher training
Differentiated Education is characterized by the training of teachers for the Indigenous Teaching, in order to form a Yanomami faculty to teach in each xapono uninterruptedly, without relying exclusively on non-indigenous teachers. Thus, the SECOYA team starts to assume pedagogical follow-up and training courses. The Yanomami teachers teach the contents necessary for indigenous protagonism through three teaching stages:
Horearewe
the one who crawls
The Yanomami teacher encourages the motor coordination and starts literacy in Yanomamɨ, dictating syllables and short words and reviews, practicing words of the mother tongue, and presenting the numbers;
Upraarewe
the one who raises
The Yanomami teacher intensifies Yanomami literacy, teaches math, and start the study of Portuguese, presenting the alphabet, practicing reading texts, researching history with the pata do xapono, working on drawings of traditional festivals, body paintings and producing maps of xapono;
Rërëarewë
the one who runs
The Yanomami teacher teaches mathematics, the four operations, the Portuguese language, translation and writing of texts, as well as drawings, stories and customs of the Yanomami people, and whatever else the class finds interesting.
TEACHER FOLLOW-UP
The Secoya team performs the work of dispersion, which consists of staying for a period in each Differentiated School to monitor the work of the teacher and hold pedagogical meetings, as well as making conversation circles with the community and students.
In addition, as a complementary action to the training of teachers, work began with workshops and training courses, where the current team, composed of 02 education advisors, hold workshops, in xapono chosen by the teachers in order to expand the pedagogical knowledge of the Yanomami teachers. To date, the following have been carried out:
2015
Portuguese Language Workshop and Workshop on Pedagogical Work;
2016
Differentiated School Education Course
2017
Mathematics Teaching Methodologies Workshop
2018
Preparatory Course for the Secretary of Education and
Quality of Teaching in the State of Amazonas – SEDUC and Workshop on the Role of the Teacher.
Differentiated teaching material
Throughout the stages of the Teaching, and continuing in the current courses, SECOYA has cherished for contemplating moments of elaboration of own didactic Materials to be used in Differentiated Schools.
They are materials built from what is being worked on in each course and/or workshop, which are written in the Yanomami language, for use in Horearewë classes. and Upraarewë, and Portuguese Language for use in the Rërëarewë class.
The dynamics of the elaboration of materials contemplates that everyone can participate in the different moments of their elaboration: in the writing of texts, in the elaboration of exercises, in the choice of themes, in the preparation of illustrations, etc.
THE YANOMAMI SCHOOLS
The schools served by Secoya were recognized as attached rooms of the State School Pe. José Schneider in 2016 by the Department of Education.
All the work and methodology of the differentiated school were explained to the Yanomami people and shown that they are guaranteed by law, both in the Federal Constitution of 1988 and in the Laws of Basic Guidelines and in Convention 169 of the ILO.
Over time, the Yanomami understood better their rights and duties as Yanomami as well as Brazilian citizens and began to accompany the struggles of the Amazon indigenous movement and increasingly defend the construction and creation of differentiated schools.
